Europe’s most spectacular trails

If you’re like us, then unforgettable trips are always at the top of your wish list.

What could be more enchanting than admiring the beautiful scenery, listening to your favourite music and living in the moment?

The best part is that Europe has some of the most sensational trails in the world, whether we’re talking about the mountainous views of Iceland or the deserts of Tirana. Pick your favourite playlist or even an interesting podcast, rent a car to your liking from Enterprise and hit the road.

We’ve got some suggestions for some of the most exciting trips you can take in Europe by car.

ICELAND

Iceland is finding itself on more and more travel bloggers’ lists. Iceland’s ring road encircles the entire country, covering 1,333 kilometres, a distance that can be covered in 12 or 13 hours, depending on your speed.

So you’ll need at least a week to really enjoy the route and take in the scenery Iceland has to offer.

TRANSFAGARASAN

We can’t talk about impressive trails without mentioning Transfagarasan, a spectacular mountain road that crosses Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, the second highest mountain range in the country. Every second of the 150 kilometres offers breathtaking views.

Speed is limited to 40 km/h because of the relatively fragile ground, but this makes it all the easier to enjoy the surroundings. At the end of the journey, the biggest surprise awaits you, Balea Lake – a landscape that will surely take your breath away.

NORTHERN ITALIAN LAKES

If you’re looking for fairytale destinations, then the lakes of northern Italy are what you’re looking for. You can start your trip to Italy as soon as you land in Milan by renting an Enterprise car and heading to Lake Maggiore. But you can stop off before heading east to admire the famous Lakes Como and Garda.

ELVETIA

And while you’re in northern Italy, it would be a shame not to visit Switzerland, a truly spectacular country, often considered the most picturesque in Europe.

The Swiss Alps are straight out of fairy tales when it comes to hidden corners waiting to be explored. We recommend starting in Arosa and ending your journey 382 km south in Zermatt.  Remember though that car entry is prohibited, so you’ll have to leave your vehicle in a nearby car park.

FROM ESTONIA TO ALBANIA

From Estonia on the Baltic Sea coast to Albania on the Mediterranean, a chain of fascinating countries stretches out, with beauty at every turn. It would take about 34 hours to cover the 2,945 km without stopping. Take the Baltic route before heading to central Poland, the Czech Republic and beyond.

There are so many roads you can drive through Europe that it would be impossible to cover them all in this article.  However, we do recommend you take a look at the routes: Vienna to Belgrade, Pula to Dubrovnik in Croatia or Edinburgh to London in the UK.

Any of the above routes can be a start to discovering the beauty of Europe. As Lao Tzu said: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” So what are you waiting for?
