Castles in Europe to visit this fall
For this autumn we propose a holiday in Europe, where you can visit the most beautiful castles. We will pass through Sinaia (☺), Germany, Portugal, Austria and Spain.
Peles Castle, Sinaia – Romania
The summer residence of the Romanian kings from Sinaia is included in the top of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Built between 1873 and 1914, the castle was built at the command of King Carol I of Romania. The castle was closed to the public for 15 years, from 1975 to 1989. Now, it is used by the royal family and can be visited by the public.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bayern – Germany
The castle that inspired the Disney company in the construction of the Sleeping Beauty castle in Disneyland Paris is one with a romantic-renaissance style architecture. Commanded by Louis II of Bavaria, the castle was a tribute to Richard Wagner. It has been included in the tourist circuit since 1886, since then receiving over 60 million visitors. Today, Neuschwanstein Castle receives over 1.3 million tourists from all over the world. Near this castle you will also find Hohenschwangau Castle. Alhambra, Granada – Spain
The Red Castle (Al Hambra = red in Arabic) is one of the most beautiful buildings in Andalusia, together with the Mosque of Cordoba being the best representations of Islamic architecture.
The architectural complex dominates the city of Granada, being located near the Albacin district, where you will find many white houses, specific to the southern part of Spain. Inside the Alhambra you will find a Moorish and a Baroque palace, as well as a church. The palace can be visited only with a previous reservation, accompanied by an authorized local guide.

Palacio de la Pena, Sintra – Portugal
Pena National Palace was declared a National Monument of Portugal in 1910 and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995. It is located on top of a hill, and on sunny days it can be seen from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The castle is used for the official meetings of the President of Portugal. The building dates from 1854, built under the command of King Ferdinand who wanted to transform an old monastery into a summer residence for the royal family.
The last queen of Portugal used it as a residence before going into exile. The castle is located about 30 km from Lisbon.

Hohenwerfen Castle, Werfen – Austria
You will definitely recognize it from the movie Sound of Music. Hohenwerfen Castle was used during filming for the beloved film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. And in 1968 he was included in the film production “Where the eagles dare”.
Built on the foundations of a former bastion, the 900-year-old castle is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of the Salzach Valley. It is located in the middle of a valley, 623 m deep, surrounded by forests in the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Tennen Mountains.
The castle was built between 1075 and 1078 at the command of Archbishop Gebhard. It was used as a residence, hunting lodge and state prison. Currently the bastion is used as a museum.
