Short history of Suceava
Today’s territory of Suceava has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period, from the 2nd to the 3rd centuries, when the Dacians apparently built their first settlement in the area. Some time later, in the Middle Ages, Petru I Musat built the Suceava Citadel on the eastern edge of the city, a representative landmark in the area.
During the Middle Ages, under the influence of the migration of peoples, numerous village settlements developed in the western part of the city, and in the 14th century Suceava became the capital of Moldavia between 1388 and 1566. Thus, with this title, Suceava also became an important economic center of the time and the main customs for internal-external trade.
During the period of Stephen the Great and his descendants, the city reached the height of its development, with the erection of numerous buildings and the consolidation of the Citadel. This is why many of the sights in Suceava, especially the places of worship, are linked to the name of Stephen the Great.
However, in the wake of the Turkish-Polish wars, the town declined. From the second half of the 2nd cent. In the second half of the 17th century, the city’s decline accelerated and attempts were made to destroy the Citadel.
After coming under Habsburg rule, the north of Moldavia was called Bucovina. It included Suceava and Chernivtsi, and in 1868 Suceava became the county seat.
In 1918, at the time of liberation from foreign rule, Suceava had about 10,000 inhabitants. A slow evolution for the city followed.
After the Second World War, Suceava began to flourish again. Important industrial centers opened here, such as paper factories, wood-processing factories, factories making machine parts, glass, food processing and light industry.
Today, Suceava is the second largest county in the country with over 700,000 inhabitants, and in terms of territorial-administrative organization, there are 5 municipalities, 11 cities, 98 municipalities and 379 villages.
